Tater Head

A.K.A. Tater, Tater Louise, Spotty, 'Tite Tete de Potat, 'Tite, Alligator Head. Scrambled Egg Breath

Tater Head (shown at right in a boudoir shot taken by Danny Brantley) was born to Malva and Dog Boy. She was the first born in a litter of three. We were present when our vet pulled Tater from her mother. The process was brutal. We were sure Tater was dead. But.... she was not dead, she was Tater Head.

Tater and her siblings (Sweet Pea and Shadow) were incredibly cute puppies. They growled and fought constantly. We wanted to keep all three of the pups but somehow managed to give the other two to friends.

Early in life, Tater was very suspicious of all humans. She nipped at children and caused many of our friends to drop a cold drink. During the first months of her life, we owned a retail mail order nursery. Every weekend, Tater Head went to the nursery with us and played with her siblings. After we closed the nursery, Tater suddenly had free time to roam the woods.

She spent hours wading in our muddy seep. Her brown dirty legs made it look as if she were wearing knee socks. When we went to the deep woods and sat on our creek deck, Tater would disappear into holes and burrows along the creek. It was alarming to hear her muffled barking from beneath the ground. At any rate, the time in the woods greatly improved Tater's disposition. She has become quite affectionate toward many of our friends. Tater Head enjoys a bone.

Tater has mellowed toward the humans but is still full of contempt for Dog Boy. She often hides beneath the bed clothes waiting to bite him in the face when he tries to jump onto the bed. Tater denies that she is Dog Boy's offspring. She believes that Skippy was her Daddy.

When she is not roaming the woods, Tater claims the bed as her own. She generally sleeps all day while we work. Tater loves to give the kiss but it is often very nasty because she inherited bad teeth from Dog Boy. Her fondness for nice juicy bones (like the one she's enjoying in the photo) does not improve the stench. On a good day, her breath smells like scrambled eggs.
